About KYARA

Kyara became the youngest woman in Canada to be elected to public office when she won a seat on Metchosin Council in November 1999. A year later, she married Edison Kahakauwila. They have two sons, Nahoa (twenty, born during Kyara's first term) and Koa (19, born shortly after she was elected to her second term).

Kyara made the decision to run for mayor after serving three consecutive terms as councillor. Not yet experienced enough for the position, she was defeated. In 2014, Kyara successfully sought election again as a councillor. She was successfully re-elected to a fifth term in 2018.

Now, after 17 years on council, Kyara has learned from her countless experiences — and mistakes — what it takes to be your mayor.  She is ready to lead the next council into a future filled with possibilities to explore and challenges to meet.
