About KYARA

Kyara Kahakauwila was raised in Metchosin by her parents, Ron and Doris Gulmans, who instilled in her a strong commitment to community service. She and her husband, Edison, raised their two sons, Nahoa and Koa, in the community and have worked together to grow their family business since 2000.

In 1999, at the age of 21, Kyara became the youngest woman in Canada to be elected to public office when she won a seat on Metchosin Council. She went on to serve five terms and a total of 17 years as a Metchosin Councillor. During that time, she served as Deputy Mayor and represented Metchosin through numerous local and regional boards, commissions and committees.

The past four years away from the Council table have allowed Kyara to continue learning and growing as a community and business leader. She has served as President of the Metchosin Community Association, Co-Chair of the Victoria Cruise Industry Alliance, a Director of Destination Greater Victoria and the Canadian Director on the National Limousine Association Board. These roles have strengthened her experience in governance, collaboration, advocacy and responsible decision-making.

Kyara’s record of service reflects a lifelong commitment to Metchosin and its rural values. She is seeking a return to Council to bring experience, accountability and respectful decision-making back to the Council table—for the benefit of the community today and for future generations.
